Wood Fence

Wood Fence

Wood is the most common resource used for fencing in America.  The prevalence of wooden fences really depends on what part of the country you live in.  In the south, where the weather is hot with less snow and ice, wood is used more often.  In the north where snow drifts, high winds, and sometimes bitter cold is common, wood fences are less common due to the wear and tear this type of weather can have on some types of wooden fences.  If you are looking for fence builders in the Nampa ID area, give us a call.  We are a reputable fence contractor that can help you get the fence that meets your needs.

Here are just some of the types of woods that can be used to create your new fence:

Cedar

  • Longevity
  • 30 years if properly maintained
  • Maintenance
  • Clean the fence with a pressure washer, but be careful the strength you use so as not to damage the wood.
  • Apply sealant every few years to ensure moisture is sealed out to prevent the wood from rotting
  • Stain the fence every 5 years
  • Cost
  • $$$$ - Other than pressure treated lumber, this is typically going to be the most expensive, but longest lasting option of wood.

Pine

  • Longevity
  • 5 to 10 years if properly maintained
  • Maintenance
  • Clean the fence with a pressure washer, but be careful the strength you use so as not to damage the wood.
  • Apply sealant every few years to ensure moisture is sealed out to prevent the wood from rotting
  • Stain the fence every 5 years
  • Cost
  • $ - This is typically going to be the least expensive wood type

Treated Pine

  • Longevity
  • 15 to 20 years if property maintained
  • Maintenance
  • Clean the fence with a pressure washer, but be careful the strength you use so as not to damage the wood.
  • A pressure treated pine should not require initial sealing since this is done via the chemicals it is treated with, however it would still be wise to apply a sealant every few years after the installation of your fence.
  • Cost
  • $$ - More than normal pine, but less than cedar.

Fence Styles

  • Side by Side
  • This style of fence is when the pickets are placed side by side tightly together.  They are not 100% private because you can still see through the cracks between the pickets, but supply a decent amount of privacy.
  • These would be lower in price than other fence styles since you would have no overlap of materials.

  • Board on Board
  • This style is where pickets are placed on top of other pickets to close out any gaps of visibility.  These fences use wider pickets and have overlapping on each side of the picket to close off any cracks.  You can't see through these fences, so this fence type provides complete privacy.
  • This would be a higher cost fence type because you would have to use more material to cover the length of the fence you wanted.  They are also more work to install.

  • Other Styles found below are less common but are used for different purposes.
  • Picket
  • Post and Rail
  • Lattice
  • Shadowbox
  • Split Rail
